Job Description

Position Overview

A Pharmacist is responsible for overseeing the distribution of medications to patients with various physical or mental health conditions. Their duties include communicating with local physicians to determine the type of medication and dosage for a customer, taking inventory of pharmaceutical drugs to reorder them based on local demand and interacting with pharmacy customers to give them their prescriptions and answer medication questions.

Position Requirements

· A Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) accredited by the Accreditation Council for pharmacy education.

· A bachelor’s degree in business administration, or an equivalent qualification preferred.

· In-depth knowledge of the pharmacological uses and side effects of prescription drugs and controlled substances.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong organizational, detail, managerial and interpersonal skills.

· Ability to proactively follow up any irregularities with scripts processed at the pharmacy.

· Experience with pharmacy management systems is required (Pioneer Rx preferred); familiarity and ability to work with practice management systems, database operations, spreadsheets, and other software systems are a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serves patients by preparing medications, giving pharmacological information to multidisciplinary health care team, and monitoring patient drug therapies.

 

2. Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders and detecting therapeutic incompatibilities.

 

3. Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.

 

4. Controls medications by monitoring drug therapies; advising interventions.

 

5. Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians’ workflow, verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals, and verifying order entries, charges, and inspections.

 

6. Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of health care professionals and counseling patients on drug therapies.

 

7. Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration.

 

8. Maintains records for controlled substances and removes outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory.

 

9. Assists the referring physician and institution in planning and implementing patient care to ensure a smooth transition from hospital to home.

 

10. Supervises pharmacy technician(s).

 

11. Verifies accuracy of all work done by pharmacy technician(s).

 

12. Participates in on-call rotation.

 

13. Assists the Director of Pharmacy in special projects or duties as assigned. 

 

14. Ensure compliance with the organization's Code of Conduct and all applicable laws, including HIPAA regulations for the protection of sensitive information.

 

15. Perform any additional duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department and organization.
