Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts - 24/7

Professional position at the Regional Forensic Science Center performing medicolegal death investigations. Responds to all reports of death, determines jurisdiction, and responds to death scenes. Conducts independent and thorough investigation into circumstances of death, including medical history, and facilitates identification of bodies. Questions witnesses, relatives and other persons to obtain pertinent information regarding decedent. Responds to inquiries from law enforcement throughout the course of the investigation. Provides guidance to and serves as the primary point of contact for decedents’ next of kin. Assesses deceased bodies and disturbing scenes of death that may involve hazardous environments, biologically contaminated or otherwise objectionable structures, and/or under extreme weather conditions.

 

 

Responds promptly to death scenes and conducts independent and thorough investigation into circumstances of death.

  • Receive reports of death and evaluate case circumstances to determine whether the case falls under the jurisdiction of the Coroner in accordance with state law.
  • Gather information for law enforcement and others at the scene that may be pertinent to the death.
  • Photograph death scenes and medications as required.
  • Collect pertinent medication and/or drug paraphernalia, and assess other relevant evidence for documentation or collection.
  • Gather detailed medical history and follow-up information as needed.
  • Assist with final disposition of unclaimed bodies.
  • Provide training and/or presentations to students, interns, and public interest groups.

 

Maintain/Initiate communication with family members and other external customers regarding cases

  • Question witnesses, relatives, and other persons to obtain pertinent information regarding decedent.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for family concerning the post mortem examination process, report content, and completion timeline.
  • Respond to long term inquiries from families, law enforcement, and the legal community.

 

Complete supporting case documents and data entry

  • Generate thorough Report of Death on all cases reported (Coroner’s cases and Jurisdiction released).
  • Compile clear and concise reports in a timely fashion detailing circumstances surrounding death, medical history, related data, and follow-up material.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a medical/biological/scientific/applied health science field. An Associate’s degree with registry certification (paramedic, registered nurse, etc.) and two years of applicable experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree. RFSC hires at two levels. Please see the qualifications for each: Required for both levels: In addition to a bachelor’s degree, one year of experience in death/crime scene investigation, emergency response, biomedical or clinical services, or an applicable applied science or trade is required. In addition to an associate’s degree with registry certification, a total of three years of applicable experience is required. Medical Investigator II: Five years of experience as a Medical Investigator working in a Medical Examiner’s Office. RFSC hires at two levels. Please see the qualifications for each: Required for both levels: Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Medical Investigator II: American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation (ABMDI) Certification.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Five years of experience as a Medical Investigator working in a Medical Examiner’s Office. Master’s degree in a medical/biological/scientific/applied health science field. Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation (ABMDI) Board Certification.
